those of you who have used minky fabric I need your advise. I am using it to back a quilt that I have made. I will post pics of everything in a bit. now my questions are these. how far apart is the quilting requirements? (no batting) the second question is how would you bind it? I got a silky binding ribbon that I was thinking of using. or should I just make a "pocket" and then quilt it? Any help would be wonderful thanks. also do you think a 2" boarder would look okay? could do a larger one but thought 2" would work.

the boarders are not on it yet.

you can do it pillowcase style, then top stitch around the edges if you want to, or go ahead and quilt it and don't worry about the back, quilt the top the way you want to quilt it, the minky will be fine. as for using the silky binding, you will need to either pin every 1" or pin about 6" at a time, stitch it and pin somemore, the minky is quite slippery and the silky ...you will be working with greased ice. a very new sharp needle at this point, lots of pins and no time to be running any races, slow stitching and it will turn out just fine. you might be able to add some sort of interfacing to help with the slippery-ness. but lots of pins and slow sewing will work too.

I am really getting excited about this. its like getting a new toy. now to just figure out how wide to make the boarders. I think that the pillow case idea is probably going to be the easiest. what about putting the silky ribbon as a sort of "ruffle" with out the ruffle part? kinda like a taggy blanket?

Per the previous advice, the minkee is very stretchy and slippery on its own. If you add a silky anything into the mix, it will be like "greased ice". Unless you want a lot of aggravation, suggest that you forget the silky binding for any purpose in this quilt. Also, if you pillowcase the top and the minkee, you will not be able to do any quilting on the top because the minkee will stretch. As Ckcowl suggested, the best you will be able to do in pillowcasing it is to then top stitch around the edges. Even then it will require concentration and slow stitching. Good luck.

Minkie is my nemesis. Love it tooooo much, as my sons would say. Tried to use it in a very small quilt for my son and could not get it to piece right. Threw it away. Have never thrown any but the TINIEST crumbs of fabric away. But that was on a crappy old 1990 Singer. But so traumatized I'm afraid to try it again on my Babylock with dual feed. And I'm not easily traumatized, I'm a nurse. Minkie is beautiful, but at least a little evil. Good luck. Your colors are so pretty and your quilt top so fresh. Even the pink minkie looks so innocent....

So this may be the really wrong advice. As I am still pretty new to this all but I spry basted mine. Sprayed the back of the minky and then put my quilt top down. Worked really well. Was pretty easy to work with then. I loosely quilted it. Then I just used a regular binding. Good Luck! I loved the end results. So soft and snuggly.

i didn't even think about spray basting..something i never do, so didn't come to mind, but may be a great way to use the minky. and as for the silky binding...if you are going to sew it together pillowcase style you could lay top down flat, right side up...place your silky binding around the top, raw edges even, fold facing toward the center of the quilt. then put the back down right side down (so the right sides are facing each other with the binding inbetween) stitch around leaving a space large enough to turn. when you turn it the silky binding will be outside, around the quilt like a silky ribbon. when you lay it out you can gather/ruffle it or pleat it, or keep it straight. . . lots of pins and still have to sew slowly along, but comes out pretty good.

I have made a few minkee quilts. The most successful being the quilt as you go strips. But as others suggested the pillow case style worked out great. I used that for small baby quilts and did the binding in cotton. I was worried about using something that would be too slippery.

Good Luck and make sure you keep the vacuum handy!!
