Can anyone please tell me when I pin my batting to top then put the backing to batting how do I sew all this together? do I baste my backing to batting? I just started to quilting.

Thank you,
Jeannine

You layer all three together at the same time. You can either pin-baste the three layers, or baste it with thread. You put the backing down first, wrong side facing you, then spread the batting over top of that, then the quilt top, making sure that your backing and batting are about 3-4" larger than the quilt top on all four sides. Tape, pin, or clip the backing and batting to the surface you're basting it on, making sure that they're both very smooth, no puckers anywhere, then smooth the quilt top and secure it with tape, pins, or clips. Then begin to baste with either small (1") safety pins or thread (making your stitches about 1-2" long, and your rows about 3-4" apart. If you're going to hand quilt the quilt you will need to do this in both directions, up the length and across the width of the quilt. If you're going to machine quilt it, then you can get away with only basting in one direction, usually bottom to top is best.

Could this be what you're asking about Loretta? I've never heard of it myself, but found this site...

Others will surely know if it's the right thing, or more about it. :)

That's one of those quilts that I'll just admire...from afar! I can totally appreciate what she put into it, but it's not one that I'll ever do in this lifetime. If I had about 40 more years to quilt, maybe! It is stunning!

Sandwich all three layers (Top, Batting, Back) together and pin through all three. Make sure your back piece is wrong side up. I pin every two inches starting in the middle and continuing in a circular motion out to the edges. I always use a larger piece than I need for my backing. After I have finished my quilting, I trim the edges straight and then bind them. Hope this helps! Keep quilting! I taught myself to quilt and have many short cuts I have learned along the way. When I pin baste, I just hook the pins, turn the project over and check the backing. Sometimes there are folds that the "quilting witch" put in or other adjustments that have to be made before quilting. It is much easier to remove unhooked pins rather than closed pins. Then closing the pins is much easier when the project is not flat.
