I generally prewash everything except the precuts. When the quilt is finished, I wash it with a few color catchers and have never had a problem. The precuts I have used were always the brand names, not the generic ones from Walmart or Joann's, so I don't know how those behave. I have never had any bleeding onto my quilts, but sometimes the color catchers come out dark. It's funny, I would expect that it would be the reds/blues/purples that throw off the most dye, but often it's the yellows/greens. I don't know why, just my experience.

I have had a batik that even though it was washed bled when my quilt was washed. Luckily it only shows on the muslin backing.

Yes, you can combine non-batik fabrics with batiks...I mostly have non-batiks, but sometimes, a batik is just what is needed as a blending color. Works great!

I'm just finishing a pseudo french braid and I used several non-Bali pops in it because of the variety they offered. They do look, at very first glance, like they might also be batik. I did not wash the batic strips before I began (everything I had read said "don't"! because the edges might fray), but I am sooo glad someone mentioned using color grabbers! Hadn't thought of that (I usually only use them when washing fabric before sewing it if it looks like it might run, but will be washing this after... mostly soft, lighter colors). Love this QB!
