Have any of you ever mixed hand and machine quilting in one quilt top? I have started hand-piecing a double bed quilt, and will continue making the blocks that way. However, when I get to the border, would it be OK to machine quilt that? The border will be made with 2.5" blocks sewn together around the quilt. I forgot the exact number, but somewhere around 200-250 of them. There will be a solid border, too. I have never mixed the two methods and just wonder if anyone else has. Don't want the quilt police to come after me!

Your quilt....your rules.... I would do a small area of the section in question to see if you like it. Keep in mind that when you wash your quilt the quilting does not standout as much (this is good for quilters like me) .

I don't see any reason why you can't do it. I machine pieced a dresden plate quilt for our bed. Some of the quilting was done by machine, and I am doing the rest by hand. I figure that it is my quilt and I will do it any way I please. Now I will have to watch for the quilt police.

I have mixed hand and machine piecing and hand and machine quilting and maybe all four. Usually it's because my impatience wins, or because I want a quilting pattern included that is beyond my FMQ or that I can't figure out a continuous line .

I have done both and it worked fine.

I have also done both hand quilting & machine quilting on my quilts. I made 4 dresden plate quilts & there is no way to quilt the indivdual blocks very easy on the sewing machine. So I hand quilted the blocks and machine quilted the sashing and the borders. Your quilt so do as you wish.

It's your quilt, so do what you want. The quilt in my avatar is done both ways. I have done several that way.

That is what I plan on doing with my Autumn quilt I just finished hand piecing. I am machine quilting it. After 5 years of hand piecing, I want the finished product. I will never take on that large of hand project again. It is king size.

I have seen quilts entered in our county fair that had both hand and machine quilting. The judge was fine with it.

I've done both on the same project. In my case, I had machine pieced everything but my machine broke when I was ready to quilt my watermelon lap quilt. Money was tight so I couldn't get the machine fixed right away. I had taken a beginning quilting class that had taught me how to hand quilt and I had the supplies so rather than wait forever to get the machine fixed, I just pulled out the stuff and started to hand quilt. Got about half of it done and my wrists started acting up so I quit.

Several years later, I found the quilt and wanted to finish it in time for a local show and tell so finished up with the machine quilting. I was really happy just to have finished a UFO and I liked the quilt enough to start using it.

Anything goes! As long as you are happy, who cares! Folks enjoyed it at the show and tell, and my family likes it so I'm happy with it.
