I am working on an applique project & I noticed one of the swaps on line specified not to use monofilament thread. My mailbox was full & I never got her response. I ironed the thread with a very hot iron, it is 100% polyester thread, which I was going to use from my embroidery threads anyway. So my question is why not use monofilament thread? any help will be appreciated

Monofilament has improved so much. Maybe someone used the older thread and had problems. I use it and have never had a problem.

It would for sure melt with a hot iron, can't believe the polyester thread didn't melt. I have only quilted with monofilament thread.

some people just hate it. swaps must please the participants.

There are 2 kinds of monfilament thread - Polyester and Nylon. The nylon will melt, I haven't had any issues with the polyester one.

Maybe that sometimes it will "knot" as tightly as regular thread does...either if you do by hand or by machine....and therefore sewing might unsew down the road.

I have a very old iron I bought at an antique store that could cook an egg it gets so hot! I can't turn it up past a 2 or it will scorch my fabric & that is the iron I ironed the thread with. I wanted to make sure it didn't melt FIRST before using it because I was familiar with nylon kind that WOULD melt. I feel like it's the greatest thing sliced bread, especially for applique! I don't know that I would use it on a regular quilt but for applique it's been great.

Oh no poor thing. Did you do all your blocks already? I like monfilament thread for some things, quilting and or applique, but have never been in a swap that they allowed it. Mine doesn't melt either.

Yes, this. It does take a little extra to make sure it doesn't unravel.

Monofilament thread is like the wash or don't wash question. Quilters will never all agree on either one. Some people hate monofilament thread and you will never change their minds. Some people love it and you will never change their minds.

I love it. It has never melted and I've washed quilts that have appliques done with it several times and all is well. If it's good enough for Eleanor Burns it's good enough for me.
