You get what you pay for when choosing monofilament thread. It's best to go ahead and buy this too or you will certainly have a mess of thread to deal with. http://www.backsidefabrics.com/thread-socks.html

I love Sulki polyester thread for applique. I use it all the time. I usually need to loosen my tension a little, depends on your machine. Sulki is the only brand that I use. I buy it from Joann's when thread is half price.

I made one quilt with the mono-thread and it has been in use for about 18 years. No problem. That said: I do not like to work with it at all and have transitioned to regular quilting/sewing thread for my quilts. I now want my stitches to show.

Hi, Thank you for your info. I am using Sulky monofilament to anchor metalic gold bias tape on a stined glass quilt. How on earth do you keep this stuff from getting tangled? I have tried bee's wax and it helps a little. I would appreciate any help with this trying procedure.

You definitely don't want to have your thread too long. Make sure it isn't longer than 18-inches or it will really tangle up on you. Hopefully others will have more tips to help you with this problem.

I am assuming you are machine couching the bias tape on your quilt, if so -

I followed tips from other members of this board regarding putting the spool of mono thread in a container behind my machine, not on the spindle, then threading it through the normal way. I found this worked for me as long as I carefully checked that the thread had not jumped out of any thread guides as I sewed.

I used this method to machine blanket stitch an appliqued small quilt.

Thanks Tiffany and DeeCee for those helpful hints. I am actually sewing this delicate gold bias tape on by hand, rather than couching on the machine. It is tedious, but worth the look of less stiching and stress on the delicate gold bias tape. It certainly is teaching me patience

I agree that you need to buy a better brand of monofilament thread. I don't like the fact that you can't see the quilting stitches. actually, I don't use it anymore. I've been using 100% cotton for my maching quilting. For hand applique, I also use cotton or polyester in a matching color. I don't do machine applique much. :)
