I agree with Tartan. If you need more quilting echo around the stars with your walking foot.

I think it's cute. maybe you could quilt some "roads" across the car print and some circular "roads" (double circles) over the pieced blocks. He will love it.

I think the quilt is great. I would just do vertical straight line quilting with your walking foot. Make the lines one inch apart, edge to edge lines so no loose threads to bury in the middle of the quilt.

You're all so sweet! Thank you already for the wonderful suggestions and encouragement. Yes, the Clay's Choice blocks were for his name and also for the spokes of a wheel (or fan blade, if you're a mechanic and actually look at the engine!). I know I can handle the walking foot - at least I have in the past. I'm practicing on scraps with free motion, but need to do more practice before I feel confident that I won't ruin a top...even a rotten one!

Your quilt looks great. The little guy will love his big stars and chosen car fabric! So finish it up and give it to him. I would do some simple vertical wavy lines ever 1.5 " across the quilt. Very easy... even easier than stipple. You can use a walking foot. I usually start in the middle and work outward on either side.
