    i'm a great fan of muslin. I buy Legacy Premium 118" wide muslin by the bolt from Joann's when I have a 50% off coupon. I very seldom use anything else for backing on table runners & table toppers.

    I am weird, but I always like my back to be pretty too. You can find sale fabrics that are as cheap as muslin. I do use white if it enhances the quilt.
