I think I posted here a while back about the Downy quilt kit I got that was mis-cut. After I had it all sewn together, I set up my table to sandwich it. As I was smoothing it down I noticed one border was very ripply. Then as I looked closer, I noticed that it was a lot narrower at one end than the other. Apparently it was cut wrong and I didn't notice. Since it was ripply I figured it was cut wonky on one side and that was the side I had sewn on. So I kinda lost my momentum and it sat there for a long time. I finally decided to get it done (I need that table for other projects) and ripped out the border. Not only was it cut wonky on one side, it was cut wonky on the other side. In other words it was shaped like this /\ (slight exaggeration) but the cuts weren't straight. They were curvy in places. How in the heck I didn't notice this when I was pinning and sewing it I'll never know. I trimmed it as best I could so that not only was it the same width all the way but also straight on both sides. It was iffy because I had already cut it to length when I originally sewed it on. I ended up cutting almost an inch off the width. That's how small it was at the smaller end. I sewed it back onto the quilt top and trimmed the opposite border to match. The original borders were about 3-3/8 from the seam to the raw edge and these are 2-5/8. I didn't trim the top and bottom borders. So they are slightly narrower on the long sides but that's ok. It took me about 30 minutes or less to sandwich and pin baste it.

So the moral is, check your precut kits. Make sure they're cut right before you sew them all together (and before you trim the length). :thumbup:

i had one that was short i did put in some of my squares and sent it on its ok as long as they get it back in usable condition

I noticed that a few squares were off a bit and had to reinforce them on the back with interfacing because the seam was so narrow.

The borders were a little 'v' shaped but that was an easy fix...made them narrower.

Definately look things over carefully.

I have found that precut kits seem to have issues. For the price that is charged, the cuts should be exact. Now if I purchase a kit, I made sure it is not pre-cut and I measure and identify all the materials before I start cutting. It's sad but true, you just have to double check everything.

I have had miscut issues with them too.they have volunteers who probably are not quilters.they do not cut perfect but are close enough.it is a great cause and the poor sick kids won't notice anyway

i have done a dozen or so QFK quilts...i guess i did not know that some were considering these...pre-cut kits...i never looked at them that way and i cut each part of my quilt myself with the fabrics included. no pieces in any of the kits i received were actually the size that the pattern called for, i cut them myself. so i did not experience borders not cut right...have they changed the kits in the past couple months? i did my last one in July. anyway...
when i have ordered kits with pre-cut pieces (twice) i found that i was always 'shorted' there was always a couple pieces that were too small so i never waste my money of pre-cut kits anymore. as far as the QFK kits...they have volunteers putting kits together, some of us who make the quilts even turn around and send in another kit for them to send to someone else. i would always go by the pattern and cut your pieces as directed, don't just assume everything is done for you.

Mine so far have been cut very well, but I will check over the ones I get in the future :D:D:D

According to the instructions that came with mine all pieces are cut to the correct width. You sew the 4-patch strips together, then trim (so they are like 2 patch units at that point) and then sew the 2-patch units together to make 4-patch units. On the border strips it just says to measure the quilt top after it's assembled and cut the length but the width is cut already. So you cut the border strips even narrower than what they send? The one set of border strips I got were only about 1.5" wide (the border between the 4-patch sets and the outside border) but I had to trim them to length after assembling the top.

I don't mind that it's not right considering it was free and for a good cause, but if had known before I started it would have saved me about 3 feet of seam ripping and resewing.

I have only done one but it was miscut as well, I just put it together as best as I could and it turned out okay, from a galloping horse. I agree, the kids won't see it or care, they'll just like the colors and the prints and knowing that there are people who care.

The one I got had precut border strips, large squares and 4 patch strips to be put together. I just got another in and it is the same way.
