Thread: my first on point top

my first attempt at anything with triangles! it is a scrappy blooming nine patch, a practice before I cut into my mother's beatiful fabrics. I learned a lot doing this, and for the most part I am able to figure out what I need to do to fix the things I don't like. but those edge points! some are perfect, and most are sorta acceptable; but there are lopped off points and some that are almost 1/8 inch from the border. The worst part is that I have not only no idea what I did wrong, I have no idea what I did right! I have searched this board for information on setting points, but haven't found what I need (clear instructions on joining triangles to squares - I think that's what I need?) any help appreciated - I want to do three lap quilts by Christmas!

I also always oversize the setting triangles because it is always easier to trim down. I made this quilt doing the D9P and setting it on point from what I call shabby chic fabrics.

That's a very pretty top! Love those colors. I have only made two on point quilts so I'll be no help in that department. I watched several tutes on internet before attempting. Like you - most came out fine but there was one or two that didn't.

Did you mean the setting triangles next to the border?? You want to make sure that the outside edge is straight of grain. One of the most popular way of cutting them is cutting from strips using a similar ruler:

The old fashion way was to cut a larger square out then do two diagonal cuts which would produce 4 setting triangles. I think the formula was 1.5 x size of your block. Not good with math anymore.
