My last "dedicated" room was also our guest room. When people came for a visit, I lost my room. Had to "clean" it all up, so people could use the fold out couch in there. Hated that! Don't understand WHY they couldn't sleep on the living room floor! We have an Aerobed! Sheesh! lol
If I still had the oldest living here, I would be back on the dining table doing my sewing with all my fabric in boxes all over the house. But, since she isn't, I have my own room.
If people come to visit here, they will just have to deal with the fold out couch being on the 2d floor and out in the open. But hey....it's right near the sliding door leading to the balcony which has great views! lol
One of these days, I'll hav my OWN room that is the size I want.

I think ya'll have it all wrong! In the 16 months since I started quilting, I've moved into three rooms! LOL! I say "watch out!" to everyone in my family, I may move into "their" space! I too, would love to have a studio to dedicate to quilting, but then who would cook or clean? I know I'd never be here if I had a studio!

Cook or clean? Just put all take out places on speed dial and hire a maid! lol

How awesome to have your own space!! I have mine too in a 'roughed-in' basement room....3walls are concrete and I love it that way! Dh says he will finish it someday...and, while I wait...I sew-sew-sew!!:0)I picked up (and they are really cheap!) 2 styrofoam insulation boards that you insulate the metal buildings with. I put the 2 of them on a wall side by side...duct taped white flannel....and,I have myself a design wall for under $10! The pins go in nice...and, it also gives a bright wall too! As far as others taking over other rooms in the house...this was his saw room...and, since he doesn't hardly use it...he came home w/the saws moved out and my 'stuff' in!:0)Nice to leave your creative moment to return as it was w/o having to clean up too! Whoever sees that creativity has to be invited there!:))Enjoy! Skeat

Congratulations on your studio! Personally, I think the basement is a great spot because, at least in my experience, it's a lot cooler in the summer down there than above ground!

However, I am like Barbm, I really like my sister's company. Even when we argue, I'm ready for her company far sooner than her!

Taking over the basement......hmmm......you're giving me ideas! I can cover the pool table with the ping pong table (take it off the frame) and put flannel over it for a wall that lays down. This could be a prospect. Nice big windows on one side, cool in summer, has heat vents for winter. Living room furniture there already. Has potential. But then to contend with last son who plays games down there. But there's too much stuff hanging around. What can I do to "make over" an air hockey table? hmmm.......

P.S. Hubby is not handy (he is, but chooses to use his talents elsewhere) to build rooms. I've wanted a bathroom down there so when people use the pool I don't get them in the upstairs. But he won't budge on a contractor. Now, if I had a bathroom there, I wouldn't have to come upstairs at all!

I also am in an unfinished basement. My husband does cabinetmaking at times so he has a large table saw table which I use for putting quilts on it is really large and high enough for me not to bend over. I clamp extra wood on end to fit quilt.
I use a table about 28 " high to sew on and 32" to cut, although 36" would be ideal for me. I am tempted to move one of his tables down to my end to use for cutting.
I use an office chair to put the quilt on when quilting. I think that he may want to finish the area, but am satisfied with it for now, just wishing it was a bit warmer, but then summer comes and it is cool down there. Being Canadian, we complain of the weather at all times. It is bred into our DNA.
