Thought I'd throw this out there as a fundraiser idea for guilds.
A few years ago, I came up with the idea of having a Mystery Raffle/Drawing at our guild meetings as a way to raise a bit of money each month. It was wildly popular for the year we did it. Sometimes we designated the super mysteries for a specific project or purchase the guild wanted to make (quilt display rack, fabrics for a raffle quilt). Everything had to be new or never used, and had to either relate to quilting or BE quilted.
Select an item worth at least $25. Ideas:
- an expensive pair of scissors purchased at JoAnn's with the 40% off coupon;
- a bundle of coordinated fat quarters put into a nice or striking container;
- a CIRCLE-cutting rotary cutter with replacement blades;
- a casserole carrier filled with homemade cookies;
- a 28x28 quilted wall hanging;
- a gift certificate from a local quilt shop
- a gift certificate from a long arm quilter (!)
- a gift certificate for a local or guild workshop PLUS a small gift certificate to offset supplies for the workshop
- a highly coveted quilting reference book (such as Barbara Brackman or Harriet Hargrave)
- one of our Supremely Talented quilters offered (4) hour-long 1-on-1 workshops on specific areas the winner wanted or needed
Put the item in a nondescript, non-revealing container, such as a brown grocery bag, black trash bag, a nicely covered bin.
Sell chances at $1 each/6 for $5 and draw during the same guild meeting. After the first drawing, we had lots of people coming forward with gifts to raffle, and they were acknowledged prior to the drawing for their gift contribution.

Oh, I would love doing this at my guild but I know without a doubt more then one member would bring something that would not be worth the cost of a raffle ticket and then these members would get mad and then the whole thing would be ruined. Do you have someone inspecting the items before the raffle? How do you deal with the not good enough sticky problem?
