How do I fold some 1 yard cuts of material to get bias strips? I am NOT making bias binding, but I need bias strips to make a totally bias quilt top - weird of me, I know, but I'll post a pic when I'm done. I just don't want to have to lay out the whole piece and cut it that way - I'd like to fold it to make cutting easier but my brain just isn't wrapping around this one!

I am starching the dickens out of the material before I cut it and I did not wash my material first (that feels weird to me!).

Thanks for your help!!

This is the way I do it, but there are multiple options:

For a true bias, cut a square 36"x36"

Fold in half on the diagonal. Starting with the point facing you, fold the pointed end up so it's even with the folded edge.

I usually start in the center if I need longer strips, but if you need shorter lengths, you can start at the ends.

Line your ruler up perpendicular to the folded edge, and make your first cut.
Then start cutting whatever width measurement you need measuring from that cut edge.

And starch is ALWAYS a good thing.

I'm curious to see what you're making.

Sharon Schamber has a video on Youtube that shows how to fold and cut bias.
