Need help with damp, mildewed fabric

    Hi all,
We are in the process of moving and resettling. On the day we moved some things into storage , it was pouring. I had a piece of fabric unfortunately in an open plastic bag inside a box It was damp when I unpacked it and had some wispy strands of mildew in a few spots. I hung it up on a porch out of sunlight. Should I just wash it with regular detergent and check it? This was specially ordered for a gift and I felt sick when I found it this way.
    Thank you,
    lots2do

I read of you put of ammonia on the wash water, it will take the smell out.

How frustrating. google how to get mold out of fabric. You can use lemon juice, vinegar, borax, bleach, etc. Just depends on application and temp of water.

Will do. Just thought this might be the place to get a quick answer. It did put a damper (no pun intended) on the unpacking. Fortunately, there have been no more disasters but I am keeping my fingers crossed. This moving deal isn't for sissies.

I would just wash it and then try further measures if necessary.

Thanks. Sometimes I get really hung up on doing things the right way and that just complicates the process.

See what a regular wash with laundry soap and color-fast bleach does. Let the fabric air dry. If the mildew or smell isn't gone, then go on to whatever solution is the next level of intensity.

because you caught it right away, you may just have to wash it normally and that will probably take it out. That is what I would try first.

You may want to hold off on putting it in the dryer until you're sure there's no mildew left. Air dry it until then to avoid heat setting any stain.

(p.s. we'll miss you up here)
