It is a LeMoyne Star with the diamonds cut from strip sets instead of a single piece of cloth.

I was going to suggest drafting from your photos as well. Measurements may not be the same but spirit certainly would be!

Take a good look at the Labyrinth pattern. Same effect, but done with triangles. I did one, and it's all squares and HSTS. Maybe you could split the difficult parts of the unit into triangles and make piecing easier.
