I had to do some basting and some hand sewing recently, and I had two spools of thread I had found in the sewing table I had inherited from my grandmother. One was on a plastic spool, and the only label on it was family dollar. I never want to use that thread again, even for basting.

The other thread is on a wooden spool, on one side says Coats & Clark's Heavy Duty Mercerized, made in USA 100 yds. The other side says Extra Strong Heavy Duty 15¢. This is a dream to work with. Since it is old I don't want to use it for things other then basting. Being new at sewing and quilting, I was unsure if they still make thread similar to this.

The wooden spool is probably for the 60's or prior as that's whats in my sewing basket from when I sewed bacy then.

I think the plastic spool would be from 70's.??

I am aware of that. Being new at sewing I'm not sure what to look for on the label. All the thread I currently have is what was in my grandmas sewing table. What would the label look like today?

I am sure the label is very similar today... I have seen it at Walmart and JoAnn's. :D:D:D

I think that's button thread and it's still mmade. You might want to try a lighter-weight thread for basting. I used to use Coats & Clarks Dual Duty thread for pretty much everything until I got a fancy machine that prefers finer thread for free-motion-quilting.

Just a word of caution - thread needs to be checked periodically because it does dry rot and get weak. If mine breaks easily when I pull on it, it gets thrown away. I don't want a project falling apart due to old thread.

Save that old wooden spool. It's a collectors item.
