I like to use flannel in some of the placemats and table runners I make. When I do use flannel, I preseason that. If I use batting, then I don't pre wash. I don't pre wash my fabrics either.

This is my 'go to' for placemats. I've tried flannel and various battings, but this porduct is worth the money. The double fusing makes it easy peasy.

I use quilter's felt or just whatever cotton batt I might have handy, Hobbs 80/20 or warm and white /natural, whatever comes to hand. Never pre-wash any of the above. Never had a complaint.

Love this thread and the information is great. One friend told me how a wine glass had tipped over on the placemat because the batting was rather thick. She switched to very thin batting after that.

I thought that is what we were supposed to do with our remnants of warm and natural or Hobbs 80/20. Well that is what I use mine for placemats. I throw the batting in the dryer before i use it. I have made many table runners and placemats and have never had a problem. Nice to use up what you have on hand.
