Hi, I need tips on sewing Minkee & fleece.
Last year I made a quilt for youngest grandson using Minkee & fleece & my experience with the Minkee was not so good. Seems like it was wonky. He loves & its soft but I cringe everytime I see it!
I have a good bit left of it & would like to use it for another baby quilt but hesitate after that experience
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I so sympathize - I tried to make Minkee squares in nine-patches with regular cotton and it was awful ... I stopped after a few blocks and gave all the minkee away to someone on the board and never looked back! My LQS told me that it is best used as the backing for a quilt. But is is SOOOOO SOFT! Mmmmmmm!

I have never one a quilt backed with Minky but I did read an article about it. It said that Minky stretches less on the lengthwise then the crosswise? I am not sure but I would find the less stretchy direction and keep my sewing and quilting going in that direction as much as possible. I have seen some amazing quilts backed with Minky on QB and FMQ also but I think they have a longarm?

I made a practice mini quilt on my LA and had the Minkie on the back, but I had the stretch going(lengthwise) the wrong way and ended up with a mess. it's become a doll blanket for my daughter and she doesn't care. The next time I practiced with the Minkie on top and that worked well, but it's hard to see what you've quilted and the back which was really the top, was no great work of quilting art, but it quilted well with no wonkiness. When I try it again, I will load the Minkie the other way so the stretch is across the top and bottom and not lengthwise, and use it on the back. It's just that it tends to sag a bit across the bottom. I love the feel and the look of it, I just need to figure out the best way to quilt it.

with minky i use a spray adhesive when I am using it as a backing and i found that it helped a ton. I have made a few quilts with minky. they are sooo very soft and when you use a satin binding they are really nice. i do agree that there is a stretch one way and would suggest that you just pull on it to see which way it pulls more and just be very careful with it. that is why i like the spray adhesives.

I've never used minkee but wonder if it'd help to cover it with something like "stitch & tear" or tissue paper, before quilting.

A lot of the quilts I have seen have been quilt as you go using Minky on both the top and back. Try looking at shannonfabrics.com, I think they have some patterns and maybe some helpful videos

I have backed several quilts with minky. I use the adhesive spray and pins whennI sandwich it. I try to avoid close quilting. For baby quilts I get the outline of their little feet and use that for border design.

What a darling idea! Personally I haven't even purchased any since I have heard of others having difficulties with it. It does feel soft though.
