:| I have spent most of the day on this site. There are all kinds of letter short cuts {OMG} that I don't understand. There are terms that I don't know "jelly roll". If I understood right, you can only use cotton thread when making a quilt. There is so much to learn and know. Is their a place for real newbies, that will walk us through all this. I am excited to get started, especially when my new machine arrives.

That's why your new hobby will not be quilting but rather playing and learning on the QB.

There are quite a few posts already about learning the shortcuts so you'll know whether you are dealing with UFOs, WIPs, or PIGS.

As for "the rules" - I think you are thinking of the quilt police. We try very hard not to say "you must!" Cotton thread is a recommendation. If you have other thread - by all means use it.

Jelly roll refers to a precut batch of fabric. Honestly I don't even know what it is - but then I don't buy precuts except fat quarters (a quarter yard of fabric cut in 18x22 inch zize).

Spend some time - read up on what's new, and you'll be an old hand at all this in no time flat.

"OMG" stands for Oh, my God, no you do not have to use only cotton thread in quilting, some people use only cotton, others use cotton covered polyester thread--it's a personal choice. I would be happy to help you any time you need it! Just pm me.

PM me if I can help answer other questions. It will soon make sense, but glad to help until it does (smile). You are asking good questions; don't hesitate to continue.

My best advise to new members or new quilters is to learn to use the "search" feature at the top of this page. Click on "Search" then type in your question and see what you find.
Welcome from Louisiana!:)

Here is a great thread for all the acronyms you'll see on here. I had the same questions when I first started. It was like "what the heck is 'DD', 'DF', 'WIP', 'LOL'" I was SO confused!

Hope this helps :D

This may sound dumb, but it helped me a lot. "Quilting for Dummies". Honestly. It has lots of neat stuff in it. Discusses all the basics, but doesn't say you "must" do something one way or another. I really enjoyed it and it helped me self teach myself. I'm still very much in the learning phase.

Welcome from Seattle. We're all here to help. Please don't hesitate to ask questions and as said above use the search function. I have spent many hours on here. I could have a quilt top made. BTW (By the way) I don't use cotton thread. Blessings
