Im working a new quilt and its already not working out right. Can somebody tell me if Im doing something wrong????
I can't get past the first step so I'll tell you what it says step by step and you can tell me what Im doing wrong.

cutting the fabric
solid
18 squares 4 x 4
36 squares 4-3/8 x 4-3/8, cut in half diagonally to make half-spuare triangles

white-onwhite print
17 squares 7-1/2 x 7/1/2
36 squares 3-3/8 x-3/8

you have to cut strips too, which I have done but I can't get past the first step of sewing

step 1
stitch white half-square triangles to opposite sides of solid 4" square.

Heres the problem. My triangles are bigger than the squares. I cut them just like the directions said. At least I think I did. What did I do wrong???? Any ideas????

You have done nothing wrong, the triangles are supposed to be bigger than the sides of the squares...

I am guessing that you will then sew triangles to the other two sides, creating a square in a square....

the reason the triangles are bigger is so that you will have a 1/4 seam allowance where the two triangles meet when you have sewn them all on...

keep going,,,you are ok

I would try to contact the maker of the pattern to see if there have been any revisions/corrections.

But, if the edge of the triangle that you sew to the square is bigger than the square how do you know line it up to sew it on. Won't it be off-center???

I fold the traingle in half and crease it , fold the square in half and crease it , then match up the creases (centers) pin and sew

I had that happen to me before too... I just lined up the triangle so the same amount was sticking out on either side of the square. It worked out fine that way for me.

Jstitch is right. Try sewing two triangles together and match it with a square. It should be the same size.

Note: This same thing confused me when it first tried it also.

The triangles won't be the same size if I would sew two together. The square is 4 x 4 and I cut 3-3/8 x 3-3/8 squares into the triangles.
