Smile Need ideas....

Calling all quilters.....

I cut a bunch of 2 1/2" x 5" strips of different browns & tan fabric. I want to make my 17 year old son a quilt and was thinking about making the Friendship Braid (I believe that's what it's called), however, I've made a lot of lap quilts w/that design & am burned out. What ideas can you share w/me & if you have pics... that would be great too. I would love to hear from you.

You can join the strips with a diagonal seam, to make a long strip. I have done that and made a quilt like the 1600 inch style....do a search for the 1600. It makes up fast.

What about this. Take a 2 1/2" square of background fabric (black, brown, tan, whatever) and sew it to the bottom of each 2 1/2" x 5" strip. Sew these together until you get the length of the quilt you want (minus the borders). Then add a 1" to 2 1/2" strip of background fabric to the long side of the previous strip. Then add another strip of colored fabric + 2 1/2" squares, perhaps starting with a 2 1/2" square so the strip is offset somewhat. Then another background then another colored strip set until you get it wide enough. Stop with a strip of the colored fabric, then add a first border of background fabric, then a larger second border of complimentary print (no florals). Does this make sense?

I saved this picture of what I call a "manly" quilt pattern. Don't know it's name, but it shouldn't be too hard to make.
Now that I attached the wrong picture, I'll try to add the right one!

The chinese coins pattern would work with your strips too.

Do you by any chance have the pattern for this quilt or know where I could purchase it? I love this and have a male to make one for. This would be perfect.
