    Default Binding math ??

How much yardage will I need to make 2.5 inch binding for a quilt 96x110 inches. I just figured I'll need 14.5 yards. Think maybe I'm overtired. grin.

I'd cut 10-11 strips, which would be 25 or 27-1/2 inches. I'd buy a yard.

Add the measurements of the perimeter of the quilt. 96+96+110+110 = 412. Add another 12 inches for seams, miters, etc. making the number to 424. Divide 424 by 40. This is the approx amount of usable inches in a width-of-fabric. So, 424/40 = 10.6. Round that number up to the nearest whole number. So, you'll need 11 strips at 2.5" wide, making that 26.5" inches of yardage, so approx 3/4 yard. Hope that made sense

Note** - This math is for binding cut along the width-of-fabric, NOT bias and NOT straight-grain**

(perimeter + 20 inches) multiplied by width of binding -> square inches needed

    divided by

(36 inches by WOF) -> square inches in a yard

    ((96 +96 + 110 + 110 + 20) * 2.5) / (36 * 42)

    (432 * 2.5) / 1512

    1080 / 1512

    0.714

The absolute minimum would be 3/4 of a yard (0.75 yard)

As jeemmerling621 said - this is for binding cut along the width-of-fabric, NOT bias and NOT straight-grain,

I would also go for at least a yard of fabric. If there is some sort of unique design or stripes or something, maybe a bit more.

    Default Thank you

Thank you all for this help. That's so helpful as I already had bought 2 yards of fabric for this binding and don't you know I used 3/4 of a yard on something else. So I have 1 1/4 yards left. I so want this UFO done.

I have the Robert Kaufman quilt app on my iPad. So the smart ladies who posted a over are correct, 3/4 yard.
