Default Clamshells

I am looking for a way to avoid using paper for sewing fairly small clamshells in rows.

Has anyone used traditional needle turn appliqué for this? I would draw the pattern onto my backing fabric before sewing the clamshells on - is there going to be a problem with this that I haven't realized?

Thank you!

Lainey

Look at the Accuquilt website or maybe even on YouTube - but I know the Accuquilt doesn't do the EPP method. There was an episode of "Simply Quilts" where the lady showed that she had one of those heat resistant templates and she used it to iron the turned part - actually I believe she starched it to give it extra hold. And I believe she did the running stitch over the shell, then pulled and drew it over the template to get the even curve before she ironed.

"Simply Quilts" was a great show - I wish HGTV would bring it back.

The major issue she mentioned if I remember correctly, was keeping the row straight as you go across. So keep a ruler handy to measure from piece to piece.

Good luck! I hope to make one some day.

I first joined here to find out that answer. I first basted the top curve, then appliqued it down. drew a line on my batting to get the first row even, then app. the next row and so on. good luck and please show us your work.

Lynnie, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see your clam shell quilt. Did you finish?

Lainealex, would like to see your too. This quilt is on my bucket list.
