I use an ordinary hand sewing needle. I like one that has a eye that I can thread but is still thin and sharp.

I have put this up before, but it really helps me thread a needle.
Cut the thread to a blunt cut, no stray hairs
Hold the thread in your left hand between your forefinger and thumb
Pull it all the way down so that you can only see a small dot
Press the eye of the needle on the dot
Roll your finger and thumb up catching the thread.
