backing with fleece

I am making a quilt top for my BIL and have found a beautiful fleece panel that I would love to back it with. When doing this, do I need to layer anything between the cotton pieced top and the fleece backing? Also, do I need to tie it or can it be fmq? I have never done that, always taken out but do know how to tie. I just don't want it to get too hot or too heavy. Thanks for your opinions.

I am making some throws and I am only putting the fleece backing and I may tie them

I agree with using just the fleece. It might get too heavy and depending where you live way too hot.

When I made my fleece panel, I just backed it with cotton and had it LA'd with no batting as it was going to Phoenix.

I had no problem FMQ my fleece backed quilt. It seemed to stick to the cotton and it went very easy.

you can do the fleece and quilt it either way you wish.

I made my SIL a large Florida State quilt and backed it with fleece....no batting. It's plenty heavy and was easy to quilt. He loves it and now my DD wants one backed with fleece.

What a timely post for me. I've made two tops for my grandsons, and their mom told me today that they love the fleece backing. (I made one for their dad years ago) But, she said it was very heavy....guess I'll leave out the batting this time. That should lighten them up, right?
