I bought a really cute pattern from Bird Brain Design at the NW Quilting Expo in Portland last weekend. I will prewash my fabrics for this project as I don't want the quilt to pucker up as much, challenge is, I've never prewashed before and while I don't think the fabrics will pose much of a problem, I'm wondering how to go about prewashing the batting... I need a white batting and was thinking to use Warm & White but am totally open to suggestions so suggest away! :-)

I was told recently to never prewash batting, at least the Warm & Natural that I use. Hopefully someone else will give you an expert answer.

why would you want to pre-wash yoru batting? you can buy batting that will not shrink-
dream poly is wonderful to work with -
there are many batts on the market that do not shrink- i have even used a wonderful wool batt that does not shrink-
read the packages and choose the batting that is right for the project you are working on.

I use warm and natural or warm and white and do not prewashed it. The old w&n had the seedy pod things in it that could ooze an oily substance but the new product is clean as a whistle.

Cute blocks

I've never prewashed batting and I would not advise anyone to do it. May come apart and make a terrible mess.

If the batting has a scrim it can be pre-washed without falling apart. That said, if I want to shrink it I rinse it on the most gentle setting of the washing machine (or in a sink if it is small enough) and dry it in the dryer. The dryer is what shrinks it, not the washer.
