I have learned that it has made things easier/simpler to keep things controlled from the very beginning.
By the time I am ready to sandwich/layer the backing, batting, and top - I am hoping that my outer corners are square and that the opposite sides are approximately (within 1/2 inch) the same lengths.
Because I layer my quits on a table top, I use the largest squares I have to make sure that the corners are square and if necessary, I will do a bit of "patting" to get the top lined up to my satisfaction.

I also would rather make my block a bit large and have excess to trim. As in when I make hsts (half square triangles), I make my squares say 5" instead of 4 7/8". That extra 1/8" gives me enough that my hsts can be squared up and look nice.
Then when I put them together to form a block, it's much more likely to be square or have less to trim up.
I also have a rotating cutting board that I sometimes use, as I don't have to lift and rotate my block, or rotate myself around my cutting table. I just rotate the mat and Tada!
Here's the one I bought, it's also great to take to quilt group:

for squaring up small HST units - I just use a small cutting mat - maybe 6 x8 - and turn that instead of moving the unit.
It's a great job for doing while watching TV - I use our coffee table or a TV tray for a hard surface. (My back does not complain - but some of you may not be able to tolerate the position for very long.)
