I went to the thread that talks about old machines but I didn't know how to search it for this specific model. And since there's over 700 pages I just couldn't face the sifting though them all. So, I'm asking here. Actually, I'm asking for a friend of mine- she got this from her mom when she died- I have no idea how old it is or anything about it, but if you have one you'll know this. Do the feed dogs lower on it? If so, how? I'm going to be directing her over the phone. Yikes. :shock:

There are manuals available online that can be ordered (usually run around $10-15 for download).

Most of the vintage machines are very similar in terms of threading and function. I don't know about this specific model, but on some machines I have found the feeddog up/down lever inside the bobbin area. Whether it's a knob on the outside of the machine or a lever on the inside, it's usually marked with a little teeth symbol something like this: ^^^^/^^^^

Judging by a Youtube video on this model, I'd say it's likely that the feed dogs on it can be dropped. Google and check Youtube for more info.

Thank you very much for the suggestion of you tube. I'll go check it out. I saw the PDF manuals to download but my friend is on a very tight budget. I even gave her tons of fabric so she could enjoy her newly found hobby. I'll pass this info on to her so she can check that out.

I found a free manual download for this machine at, of all places, http://www.singer.com ! If the link below doesn't work, go there and click on "customer support" and then on "instruction manuals" and enter 1919 in the search. It will come up with w1919 which is the White machine! Maybe that model was made by Singer??? Anyway, here is the link I found:
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html . You need Adobe Acrobat to download. It downloads as a PDF which can then be printed out.

I did a search through the manual but did not find anything referencing dropping the feed dogs. As I mentioned before, I would look for a knob (at the base of the machine, usually around the stitch selection column) or a lever (in the bobbin area, with the bobbin cover open) with the teeth mark logo on it.

Katie Farmer from the Treadle On group is the White expert. She also has a Webshots album that contains picures of the old Whites as well as copies of the manuals, etc. Treadle On is a Quiltropolis group. I have 4 Whites ranging from the i890s to the 1960s. I love them all but there is a difference in them and the Singers.
