I recently had the same problem trying to mark a dark maroon batiq border. I found a marking pen that worked great for me. Chalk was no good, as I hand quilt, and the chalk just doesn't stay with all that bouncing. The pen I bought is a white marker, very fine point, and is removed by ironing, although the quilting stitches covered up that line, so I did not bother ironing it. It is made by Clover, but I see no name on the package except "white marking pen-fine" I think I bought it on connecting threads web site, although I did see one in Joann's the other day. I was really pleased that I could mark the border all in one shot on a flat surface, instead of trying to mark every three inches or so as I went along. I don't know if this will help you finish your beautiful ny beauty, since the fabric you used is satin and maybe cannot be ironed. I think the price was around 6 dollars.

Wow! That is beautiful! I live in the state of New York and would love to make that as a wall hanging. Any chance that the pattern was paper pieced? That's about the only way that I could manage it. Also, how large is the finished piece? Again, that is truly magnificent.

Beautiful! That is one of my favorite patterns.
I made a table topper for our daughter when I just started back in quilting. I could, or course, see lots of things that needed touching up, but she loves it, so that is what counts.
I am glad to know about hair spray on chalk to get it to last for a marking tool.

You ought to check out some of the NY beauties some of ladies on this site have made. I have the pattern and can hardly wait to start one of my own. I have a couple projects I need to finish first.

Nita, If you're interested in paper piecing, you should check out a book called "Karen K. Stone Quilts". There are several New York Beauty patterns in it, including the actual pattern for her 'Cinco de Mayo' pattern (shown on the cover) which makes a 12" block. If you want to use her pattern for the 12" block, you can easily trace directly from her paper pattern, included in the book. I found using tracing paper works better than regular paper for the printer, as it tears away easier. I made a quilt using this pattern and made a quilt that's about 5' X 6'. You can stick with her blocks or you can easily mix and match the different components to come up with your own original blocks. I did some of both. Paper piecing is the only way to go with this pattern. Getting those sharp points is so easy and each block turns out so close to the same size.

I am not an experienced quilter by any means and am not familiar with this pattern, however, the block shown looks like Lady Liberty's crown. Maybe you could quilt the statue of liberty or parts of the statue in the border.

I agree with Klue about the quilting design for the border. And the gold paper is wonderful stuff!!!

I would suggest marking the borders with the white Sewline chalk pencil. They are amazing and so easy to use!! It looks like a mechanical pencil. My girlfriend has the white one and has let me try it and I have a yellow one. I haven't tried the red or blue chalk pencils but the white and yellow are so amazing it makes me want to get the other colors and never use anything else again! The lines stay but you can easily wash or erase them out. I have brushed them out but I tend to mark a bit hard when marking my lines and it's easier to simply wash them out when I wash the quilt after it's finished and I'm ready to block it.
