My neighbor Mike asked me to make a quilt for his wife who is living here in the US. She is from New Zealand and he thought it would be nice for her to have something that resembled her home land. Any suggestions? All would be appreciated. I don't want to make something that will take forever, but something fun!

All that comes to mind for me is "Kiwi" both the fruit and little bird. Sorry, not much help.

Start by asking him what he thinks would be representative of NZ and what would make her happy!!

Perhaps he could give you some pictures and then you could print them on fabric .... her home, her family, places they've been to and things they have done as a couple in NZ, etc.

Include a map of NZ with a star for her home. Maybe a family tree, if she's homesick for her family.

Get him very involved .... and you'll be happier, and so will he .... and she will be overwhelmed at the co-conspiratorial results! :)

Yes, QuiltE getting him involved is exactly what I wanted to do. He has already expressed to me that they have basically 2 flags, and the famous fern, and black and white color. I was hopeing for someone to tell me there is a pattern out there somewhere that would depict all these things, so making it would be easier. I've never tried just making a quilt other than a rag quilt with no pattern.

...and mountain peaks, which can be as simple or complex as you want to make them.

Wouldn't photos printed on fabric be an easy way to go? Then frame them up with sashing etc.

You could do a Bargello in shades of green , New Zealand had green lush mountains.
