So I wanted to practice the actual quilting and binding part of the process before doing so on my quilt top. I messed around and quilted a little block. I've been reading about binding, but I'm not sure I get it.

From what I've read you take a strip of fabric, fold it in half and sew it to the front first? But do you sew it right sides together? And then fold the other side over and hand sew the back?

you fold wrong sides together, sew both layers onto the front, fold it around to the back and sew down the fold along the sewing line.

What I usually do is: Cut a strip 2.5 inches wide, fold it in half (right sides facing out) and iron it. I then match up the "raw" edge of my quilt sandwich and the "raw" edge of the binding strip, pin this down, and sew a 1/4 inch seam on it. I then fold it over to the back, pin it down, and do a Stitch in the Ditch on the top of the binding, making sure to catch the binding on the back. Some people hand sew the back part on, but I really dislike hand sewing, so I do it by machine!

If you Google "How to bind a quilt" there are tons of articles and videos on how to do it, sometimes it helps to have a visual. Look at a few different ways, and pick the one that works best for you. There really is no "right or wrong" way when it comes to quilting!

So I would sew along the folded edge of the binding? What keeps the front side of the binding from pulling up?

That's starting to make a bit more sense. If I can avoid hand sewing, I'm all about that. ;)

I do mine the same way because even after surgery on my right hand, my fingers still go to sleep.
