I use my husband's grandmother's quilting frame. She came over in 1882, and the frame may be almost as old as that. It is 4 "sticks" (2 at 78" and 2 at 90") that were clamped together at the corners and the quilt back was thumb-tacked on. The batt and top were laid on that and then the quilt was tied.

When I inherited them, I used bolts to hold them together and stapled a strip of denim so I could pin the quilt back, batt and top altogether onto it. A neighbor said he could use it for a trampoline. The ties were always perfect. Later, my son made a new set of 96" long sticks so I could tie larger quilts. Then I learned to pin-baste so that I could FMQ. My husband has now made a set of 48" sticks so I can work on baby and lap quilts without taking over ALL of the living room. A friend had a set of 102" sticks that I could have had after she died, but I let them go. So sad. :-(

I hand quilt in a weekly group and I love to do appliqué. I also hand sew the bindings and love the finished look of it. That said, I love taking tops to my favorite LAQer as well.

Maviskw, that is what we use at the "Kalico Kwikters" in Yorkville, Illinois. We are about 25 to 40 women every Wednesday from 8- 3. It is so much fun. We pin our quilts and have 4 going at all times. We have a coffe break with show and tell at 9:30 and lunch at noon. If your quilt is being done you and the other 3 ladies are in charge of lunch. Coffee break snacks are from volunteers. If you are ever near Please join us. We are upstairs at the Farmers Co-op. This group is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

I too like the hand binding. It feels like adding an extra dose of love & gives me time to admire what I have done. I challenge myself as I go to make pretty invisible neat stiching.

Even though I have EQ5, I still sometimes like to work with the graph paper as well. I can do it in front of the television, and go at my own pace. I also like the sewing of the binding. I like feeling of "almost finished".

I like the hand embroidery. Don't do a lot of it and have been practicing embroidery stitches on my 401. Getting better but still enjoy the hand embroidery.

I hand stitch my binding also to the back of the quilt plus I hand quilt the top except for the border and I machine quilt that.

After my neighbor hand binds, she stitches her label by hand embroidering the information along the binding. Often uses matching thread or a shade off and uses tiny stitches.

Red face

***
*** I hand quilt on a Hinterberg floor frame that I bought on CL.
***
*** I do a lot of scissor cutting (I don't do well with a rotary cutter, but use it some times.)
***
*** I hate hand sewing the binding so I usually do a machine one but I love hexies by hand.
***
*** I hope one day to do a completely hand stitched quilt.
