I second costumegirl's comment. The first image that comes to mind is a solid-color satin comforter that reads as a medium tone on black-and-white film and photographs beautifully. Although there were no shortage of cowboy movies and other rustic themes with a variety of quilts in old movies, that's not what we usually think of as "Old Hollywood" - it's about the glamour.

Any ideas/suggestions/helpful links to get me on my way?

Lots of photos of "Old Hollywood Quilts". I saw red/purple, but not many black. Many were made using satins.

A satin front with something else on the back, so it will not fly off the bed when the recipient rolls over? I am currently collecting statins and brocades for a puff quilt, that might be the easiest to do with satin. IMHO

"Old Hollywood" seems to be coming back into vogue. My husband and I were shopping for furniture recently. You know how furniture stores have furniture staged to look like rooms? There were several bedroom set-ups where I fully expected Mae West or Marilyn Monroe to come walking out, dressed in a satin robe with a glass of champagne in one hand and a cigarette in a long holder in the other. There was lots of white satin, silver accessories, mirrors, padded headboards, art-deco style.

What a fun challenge! Good luck and have fun!

You can go nuts trying to make a quilt to match a decor.

I think the art deco suggestion was a good one, if you are intent on making something to match "Old Hollywood".

Old Hollywood is definitely not patchwork or traditional quilts. I would expect to find whole-cloth or perhaps two different colored large piece fabrics where the quilting is the focus. I think the quilts were more like comforters, and satin or other slippery fabrics were used.

Styles might be art noveau for the silent movies and art deco for the 30's and 40's.

    What a challenge you have!

If I was making a gift quilt, I really like your choice from quilter's cache. The only change I would make would make every other block a solid color. All the stars seem too busy for me. If you can find out what colors she is planning to use, I think the gift quilt will fit right in. JMHO Would love to see the quilt when it is done.
