I was reading some of my old quilters news letters when i found this info...its good to press open when several seams meet, but not with poly batting cause bits will beard at the seams. If you plan on doing stitch in the ditch.press to the side as other wise you will weaken the seam.

I do both so now i know when and why and thought it might help some :D people

Thanks for that Ruth - interesting re the poly batting. I always thought it was written in stone that seams MUST be pressed to the side in ALL patchwork until I started doing One Block Wonders where you have 6 or 8 seams meeting in the middle so press OPEN. Now I'm much more flexible in my pressing and will sometimes press open in 'regular' patchwork to get a flatter block. I never SID so don't have to worry about that, and I always use a shorter stitch length if I know I'm pressing open. But thanks for the heads up on the poly - will look out for that! :D

There is another thread on this page called "Iron Seams Open" that also addresses this same topic. It references other information on the side vs. open debate.

Here it is Ruth - I hadn't seen it either, but I guess it's the same discussion as we were starting here! :D http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/23185.page
