Go to YouTube and search hand applique or other quilting terms. You'll find a ton of videos to watch.

I have taken a couple classes from quiltunviersity.com
I had personal interaction with the instructor and the other students. I got to go to class and work on the project any time I chose. I kept a notebook of printouts for each class. I have a friend who has taken many classes because it is difficult to drag a sewing machine and she tires easily and has trouble keeping up in a live class. My experience was that it is great way to get expert instruction relatively cheaply and yes I learned a lot.

I take classes at quilt university too. Worth the low fee, up to date techniques are offered.
