Hope I didn't mislead anyone . . . definitely NEVER a regular leaded pencil. :roll: I only use a quilting pencil and so far haven't had any troubles. I also mark as I go because it's such a soft pencil, like chalk it will wear off with lots of handling.

I usually sandwich and then mark. Seems to work best for me.
