    I always take a photo (that I can delete afterwards) as you have of several layouts and see which one I like the best. I once made a KS Bargello and NO one found the one 12in piece that was upside down until after it was quilted and I took a photo. It stood out like a sore thumb! I like your #1 also. Smiles, Brenda

    How about option #2 only pull your squares to the middle using the background to form a smaller cross way in the center but also have a boarder around outside.
