Default Our Country/Memories block suggestions?

This quilt was featured on an episode of F & P and I loved it. I found the book it was featured in on amazon.com for nearly nothing. This weekend I was able to spend some time making a test block. It isn't perfect, but I think it's good enough that I'll keep it and use it in the quilt (someday). Since I have used a fabric that looks 60's to me, I'd like to stay with that era for the rest of the stars. I know paisley was popular, and also plaid. Is there any other fabric I should be looking for? A google search produced tons of psychedelic patterns and I don't want to go that direction. I need to use patterns with very little white background because I want the stars to show up.

According to the book, this pattern was published in the Kansas City Star as "Our Country." Thanks for any suggestions.

If I remember correctly, big flowers were popular in fabric back then. I can almost see a dress I made. Of coarse we went into polyester double knits about that time too. I don't think you want to go there.
