    Overall quilting

I'm fairly new to quilting. I basically have only learned the Log Cabin method. I notice many quilts are top-quilted after the design is done. on my Log Cabin quilted table runner I didn't do this as I really don't like having that on top of my design - kind of think it covers overtop of it. At my quilt class, we just sewed "in the ditch" to anchor the pieces. Is this okay to leave it like that? Anyone else prefer leaving off the top quilting? I can see where it would be good to have it though. Thoughts?

i've made many quilts and just finished 'in the ditch' or echo quilting around the shapes. whatever you like is the right thing to do.

It's entirely up to you as long as your quilting is spaced according to the batting instructions.

There is no right or wrong. Some quilt look better with an all over quilting design as long as it doesn't distract from the piecing. I prefer my quilting to enhance the piecing I have done.

I prefer stitch in the ditch, as I really like my quilt top to show, and not the stitching. I am in the minority among quilters, but it is the way I prefer to finish my quilts. With that in mind, I buy batting, usually Warm and Natural, which can be stitched as much as 10 inches apart. It works for me. There are no quilt police and we each do what we prefer and admire all of the different ways to enjoy our hobby.

As Dina stated no quilt police and it's your quilt. I do check the batting suggestions as to how far apart it should be quilted.

As you can see, there are no quilt police. I prefer stitch in the ditch, and echo quilting. I've seen many members here show beautiful all over quilting. They are very talented! Do what you like and what makes you happy. Be sure to share your creations!!

I agree with you. I dislike all that top stitching also. I feel it takes away from the pattern I've pieced. That's the great thing about quilting though, everyone can follow their own desires.
