For our guild challenge this year we are doing a paint chip challenge. Since I brought it up as a suggestion to the guild, I get to be in charge of the "rules". What are some of the rules you have followed doing this type of challenge? How did you pass out the paint chips? Any information is appreciated.

I let the people pick out two paint chip from a bag, they had to use those colors plus one more color of there choice

Oh how funny! I always imagined the "paint chip" swaps used those strips that had multiple colors of paint, coordinated for decorating, not the single chips!

Well I had no idea what a paint chip challenge was but now I am beginning to understand. Would they make just a block with it or a whole quilt?

out guild has each member bring three chips with a color name that begins with the same letter as one of their names...first, middle, last...of course with crazy color names nowadays, you can get all kinds of colors....they each put their three chips into an envelope then people draw envelopes and have to make a quilt with the three colors in it. makes for some interesting, but always beautiful, color combinations.

From what little I can find on the internet, you pick up the paint chip strips or pamphlets from a paint supplier, put them in envelopes (so no one can pick out their favorite color, hence the challenge) number the envelopes and have each member draw a number from a bag or whatever. Then they have to use at least 2/3 of the colors on the paint chip in the corresponding envelope. They can use as much or as little of any of the colors on their chip strip.

I would like to hear from anyone who has done this in the past and what were some of the rules you had to follow. How big or how small a project were you limited to? Did you all use the same pattern? What kind of time frame did you have to get your project done?



Here's what I thought of using for some of the "rules":

1. Use at least 2/3 of the colors on your paint chip strip
2. You can use as much or as little fabric in your chosen shades as you want
3. You can add other fabrics as needed
4. The project has to be at least 18" square (depending on if we all use the same pattern)
5. No trading of paint chips between members, this is a challenge to get you out of your comfort zone
6. Save your paint chip strips for the big reveal on "chosen meeting date to finish by"
7. Most of all have fun

I would also say that no one has to participate if they don't want to.

Is there anything else any of you think I should add yo make it interesting?

At our last Guild meeting this is what we chose to do:
Paint Chip Challenge – The President passed around a bag filled with paint color strips. Each member took 2 strips with the goal of creating a quilted project to be displayed at the our Quilt Show in May. The guidelines are as follows:

• The project can be any object but should be quilted in some way.
• The project should be finished but might not be quilted by the time of the show.
• The project should include one or more colors from both strips.
• One color from one strip must be the primary or focus fabric of the project.
• You may add other colors to the project.
• The paint strips must be displayed with the project at the show.
Of course, it was a blind selection. Hope this helps!!

We did a paint chip challenge last year for our quilt show- people choose their paint chips based on their initials. For example, Mary Ann White could use colors whose name started with M, A, or W. If the person had a maiden name, or two middle names, that could be used as well. They had to use at least two and no more than four colors. The only other colors that were permitted were black and white/natural. Members found their paint chips on their own, and the chips had to be included as part of the submission. It was lots of fun and we got quite a bit of interest.

I had never heard of this challenge either. Sounds like fun. Hopefully, it is only a block or small wallhanging especially if you didn't like the chips you "picked" !!
