Hey, didn't get the post bookmarked. Drats!

But I looked over some books for the pattern. IF the 4 'blocks' just meet the in center, then it is an Indian Hacket laid out as a 4 patch block.

If it has a small square in the center then I found it as a St Andrew's Cross.

Indian Hatchet was VERY popular during the time period the lady in the photo looks like she was living in. Perhaps, 1940-50s?

The blocks consists of 4 squares. Each square is the color you want the 'x' to be when you place the 4 sections together to make a block. On each of these 4 sqs., you place a small triangle in 2 corners, opposite each other. The triangles are the background... all of these pieces in the block can be random scraps. There needs to be a real contrast to make the quilt look good.

4 Patch Block can be made like this: Say you background sq is 4" sq and red. You place a 2" sq in one corner (say whhite) sew in the diagonal to make a triangle.. Place another 2" sq (in white) on the diagonally opposite corner of the 4" sq. Sew on the diagonal again. Press the triangles in place. Do each 4" sq section the same way.

The sew the 4-4" squares into a 4 patch, with the background (red) fabric forming a X.

WHEWWWWW... check for typos, hope there are none.

Did get this to the right poster. She confirms the block is the Indian Hatchet done as a 4 patch.
