Default Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 sewing machine

I have a chance to buy a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 online for $1697. Is this a good price? I plan to talk to our local dealer Wednesday to see how much they're selling them for but wanted to ask the board's opinion on the machine. I searched other threads on here and it sounds like people seem to love Pfaffs. I have a Janome 6600 but the Pfaff has a couple extra features that intrigue me. The throat is slightly bigger, the 2 FMQ modes, electronic thread tension, bobbin winding from the needle. For those of you who have the 4.0, what do you like/dislike about it? Does anyone know, are the Pfaffs still made in Germany or are they made in China now too?

Thanks for the help! My husband says if it's a good enough deal, he'll think about it!

I don't have a Pfaff, but my sister has one (not the model you are looking at). The one thing that aggravates me about her machine is the location of the presser foot lifter. It is to the right of the needle, under the arm, and I am used to machines with the presser lift behind the needle.

Found this list of completed purchases on eBay, which should give you an idea of pricing:

I have the QE 4.0. I paid just over $2000.00 CAD for it new in 2010. The dealer told me it was made in Sweden. My older pfaff (7530) was made in Germany and I love it too.

I love the 4.0. It has a really neat feature that I don't want to do without. If you have the needle down function engaged, then you control the presser foot with the foot pedal, so both hands are available. It is really great for chain piecing.

Otherwise the presser foot is engaged by pushing a button on the front of the machine, there is no lever. It comes with a knee thingy to use instead of the foot pedal if you want.

I also like the sensormatic feature for FMQ. It has helped me improve. You can also FMQ with the spring foot, but mine didn't come with it and the sensormatic works so well that I haven't felt the need to purchase the spring foot.

The info button tells you whether you can use IDT with each stitch and what foot to use.

I love this machine. The only thing I don't like is the automatic thread cutter as it leaves the thread too short so I don't use it.

I have a Pfaff 2056 I bought in 2005. Love the IDT, needle up/down, auto pressed foot, fmq option, all the stitches, it is a fairly quiet running brand. All my previous machines have been Pfaff. Never had any trouble. I don't think you can go wrong with Pfaff. Love the IDT so much, I leave it on for everything I sew. I think you will be pleased with that machine.

Not sure about the model your interested in but my pressed foot lift is at the back.

I have the Expressions 4 and have a love/hate relationship. When it's working it's wonderful but when something goes wrong it's hard to tell what it is. My auto thread cutter gets stuck all the time and after having it back to the dealer twice he told me to "get used to it". I've had the needle threader in for adjustment and replacement twice. I will be sewing along just fine and all of a sudden the tension will go crazy. I sometimes have to re-thread the machine several times before it sews again. Had to take it back because it wouldn't wind the bobbins. Most of the things that go wrong I would be able to fix myself but the manual is totally worthless when it comes to troubleshooting. I paid full retail and don't know if I would again.

I have the Expressions 2. I love. I have had it for two years and paid $1500 for it. Don't know if that helps you any or not. I am not sure I would want to buy any machine without being able to try it out though. I love the built in walking foot. I bought my machine locally and have had very good service on it. There was only one problem, and I had had it a year and a half before that showed up. It ended up being a recalled part that was replaced by the next day.

I have 2 Pfaff machines and I love them. My quilting buddy has the machien you are looking at and wonders why she waited so long to buy a new machine. I have only done regular maintainence on mine. You won't go wrong with a Pfaff. The ITD is a wonderful feature.

I had the Pfaff QE4.0 and loved it! I decided to upgrade because I also wanted to do embroidery, but I've often wished I would have kept that machine to carry to classes. I believe mine cost 2000$ new. If I was in your shoes, I would snatch that machine up!

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread as I bought one of these machines last week and I'm wondering 13 months or so further on if you're still happy with the Expression 4.0 (or the later 4.2).

Perhaps there are other members who have bought this machine since the last message (Dec 2012). I would like to read your comments about it too.
