Wow, interesting thread. I have the 10 degree ruler and hadn't heard of the extension so I went on her site and looked at samples from her 20th Anniversary book. I especially loved the Woven Baskets and Bargello patterns. More quilts in my future 😊.
Peggy, I loved your quilt. Did you applique the center onto the black background? Love the shape of the border and think it's cute about your conversation with Jan. Very deserving to get your fabric as, I agree, she teaches us so much here (as do you too).

Yes. And I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but I quilted a mariner's compass into the center. I was going to micro-stipple parts of it to enhance the design but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yes. There's a free tutorial somewhere on the internet, I found it recently but didn't mark it. If you google "vortex quilt" you'll find it.
However. I used a pattern produced by Andi Perejda, it comes with a DVD and includes instructions for 2 different sizes of quilts. It's the center DVD pictured here: http://www.andiperejda.com/dvd.htm It's about $20 for the DVD and, IMO, completely worth it.
