When do you consider a quilt to be beyond salvageable?

When do you consider a quilt to be beyond salvageable?
I am of the opinion that even quilts well and lovingly made can reach a point of no return.
Where is that point for you - if you think that a quilt really has reached the end of its useful life?

It would have to be so threadbare and have batting hanging out in multiple spots before I'd consider throwing it out. Even then, if it was something I held dear, I may think of a way to salvadge a piece of it like perhaps framing a part of it. If it doesn't have batting hanging out of it, I would donate it to Goodwill or Easter Seals.
I have some pretty old quilts, picked up from antique shops and auctions/estate sales. Even those that aren't in the best shape usually have a portion that can be folded to show a nicer part over an old trunk or on the back of a chair.

If it has personal memories attached, I'd fold it so it can be displayed with the best parts showing. There are coffee tables, for example, that are meant specifically to showcase an item/items. Or, cut out the nicest pieces and frame them.
I've also seen santas at a craft show that were darling that were made from cut ups (old quilts cut apart).\

I re-purpose them into smaller lap quilts (cut and bind)...you can make darling teddy bears of old quilts, bags for lap tops or ipads, can surely find spots still intact for place mats, table pads, table runners..a wealth of uses rather than tossing.
