Computer paper works fine if you don't have anything else. They possibly used newspaper way back when. It was used for paper piecing.

Paper stabilizers can be pricey, however, in one quilt class I took on applique, the instructor told us to use parchment paper or waxed paper. I used the parchment paper and it gave the same results as paper stabilizer, and a lot cheaper, especially since it is readily available at your local super market.

I purchased the largest coffee filters, pressed them flat, and they tear off very easily, and they are very cheap to purchase at the dollar store. You can also get the very large coffee filters for the largest coffee machines you can rent.
