I am new to quilting and will be using a machine to piece my tops. As I look through quilting books I have noticed that many of the patterns require an applique. Before I purchase a new machine, what machine stitch is used to do an applique? Can a stright stitch be used or do I need to use a stitch that looks more like a blanket stitch?

Thanks, Betty

A blanket stitch is beautiful (I prefer) but a zigzag will work.

There are several stitches you can use for applique. A straight stitch, the buttonhole, zig zag and even some of the decorative stitches can be used. If you buy your machine from a reputable dealer they should offer lessons and be able to asisist you in choosing the stitches.

You might find you like doing things a little "old school" when it comes to applique and get into needle-turn (without a machine). My MIL does beautiful applique that will never be duplicated by any machine.

Thanks, Michelle. I really value the advise of you Pro quilters so I thought I would get your opinions before I jumped off the bridge into the deep water.

Good suggestion. Maybe I can find someone close by who has this skill that is willing to give me a few lessons on hand applique. Thank you for responding.

Check out LQS. They usually have a variety of classes including hand applique. If not, ask. Maybe they have others interested and will schedule a class. Or check out local guild. Someone there can help you. I prefer hand applique to machine but do sometimes use satin stitch or blanket stitch.
