yes, a 6 1/2 square ruler has your 1/4 built in 6+1/4 + 1/2 = 6 1/2. there are also 2 1/2 x 18 and other sizes.
sorry, i meant 6 + 1/4 + 1/4 =6 1/2" square
just take a deep breath and start cutting it will be ok
Yes, some templates have the seam allowances included. All the commercial ones I've seen have it clearly marked--some even have cutouts of it so you can mark reference points in the seam line like you do for clothing patterns.
Which templates are you speaking of? If you can post a picture or link to them, someone will surely know.
