Default For Piecing -- Light or Dark Thread

When you start a project that will have many colors of every shade, what color thread do you go with on the machine? I have always tended toward the light. An off white or a soft grey. Or does it really make any difference for you? They're not really supposed to show anyway.... but on mine, sometimes they do.

generally---if the majority of fabrics are leaning toward darker colors i use a medium/dark gray- or tan
if the majority are mainly light fabrics i use a lighter gray or cream-
if they are fairly even lights/darks i use what ever happens to be on the machine.

I use all hues of colors - depending on my mood. When I am strip piecing darks together, I like to use thread color as close as I can to the fabric color. I use white on whites, and then all hues of creams and greys. Right now, I am trying to use up as much small quantities on a spool as I can. The thread police may get me, but I use all thread, cotton, polyester, cotton wrapped polyester, polyester wrapped cotton - all together, as long as my machine can use it, it gets used. But new thread that I purchase, I am trying aurifil.

I use cream most often. If most of the colors are dark, I use a dark grey. At the moment, I am piecing fabrics that have lots of white, so I am using white thread.

Scrap quilts I use a medium grey. If a quilt has a fair amount of white with other colours, I use white.

Always, almost always, gray tones. Gray disappears on most colors and patterns except for very bold colors. peace

I would usually use gray. I have been told it is better to go a little darker than lighter. Not sure how true that is but I go by that rule.
