when making placemats and table runners how many layers of flannel would you use? and also for quilts?

I like my place mats and runners to have some body to them so I use a batting that is a bit stiffer than regular quilt batting, the bolt label says it's "needle punch". One layer is all I use and it doesn't soften like quilt batting when washed. In my quilts I use one layer of Warm and Natural. :)

When I make table runners and placemats, I use one layer of heavy flannel or two of the thinner flannel. They get washed a lot more often than most things and I like them to be easy wash and use.
