I have some leftover batiks in my stash from a quilt I made for a friend. They're not my colors or my particular taste. I thought I'd make a set of placemats for my friend as well by using the tube quilting method. Well, I made one and used 2.5 in. strips on the side to make it rectangular, but it doesn't seem quite large enough (16"x12"). What's "normal" or at least practical for placemat size? Thanks!

According to my web search its 16 x 12 but another inch deeper wouldnt hurt depends on the size of your dinner plates. Most are 8" but some are much bigger and you want a bit in front and behind the plate I assume.. the length is fine but I make mine a bit deeper because my plates are 9 1"2 across. Hope that helps..

Lay them out on your table and put a plate, silverware, glass, etc around them. That will help you gauge if they're the right size.

I think table size and plate size are a big consideration. My Mom has an antique kitchen table that is much narrower than standard, so all of her things must be smaller. Scope out your friend's table the next time you are over there to gauge your size.

Thanks all. That's helpful. I don't normally use them myself, so I was at a loss as to what would be typical. And I hadn't even thought about the size of the table all that much - good point.
